Friday's Favorite Family Foto

My Friday Favorite Family Foto grouping this week seems to have a wedding and watch theme. These pictures have a story that weaves through them and binds 4 generations with something as simple as a watch. Read on~~~~~~~

Welcome to another Friday Favorite Family Foto celebration hosted by the sweet and thoughtful Deborah. If you want to participate in our fun Friday happenings, click on the "Photos" button on the right side of my blog.
The first photo is of my mother as a bridesmaid again in what she calls her "fish shark" dress. She hated this dress but I just love how her hair, headpiece, and large bouquet of flowers offer a visual reference into the 1930's.

This next picture is one of my favorites of my mother. She was always a fashion plate and I just love how she coordinated her hat and gloves to this suit. Notice the watch on the left/heart side of her body. There is an interesting story about the watch and it goes like this:
This watch has been in our family since 1913 making it a 96 year-old heirloom. My Grandmother, Rose, wore it for her wedding on July 20, 1913. You can barely see the watch in this photo but it is on my grandmother's left/heart side. My grandmother was 15 years old on her wedding day and she hardly knew my grandfather. They were married until his death in 1956. They were both immigrants from Sicily and my grandmother always spoke of "the big lady".....the Statue of Liberty as she and her family went through Ellis Island when she was a little girl.

My mother, Sarah, wore the watch on her wedding day, September 12, 1943. I, too, wore the watch on my wedding day, November 18, 1978. I, however, didn't have any pictures taken wearing the watch. I, instead, thought that the watch was not appropriate for my dress, so I wore it under the top part of my dress. In keeping with tradition, I did wear it but it can't be seen. I tried to scan a photo that shows part of the watch chain in the "V" part of the top of my wedding dress, but the picture didn't scan well at all. I'll have to find some other pictures and hope that they look better.

Here is the watch in my daughter's young hands taken on her wedding day, February 4, 2006. We have pictures of her wearing the watch before the wedding, but for some reason they wouldn't upload for this post. I'll try to show her pictures along with my wedding pictures in another post.

Finally, here is the closed watch in my mother's "older" hands. This watch is a true family treasure.

Thank you for offering such a meaningful and beautiful post today! It was enthralling. Your mother truly was a snazzy dresser, even in that bridesmaid gown that she hated! (personally, I think it was gorgeous)

The photos of the watch being handed down and the accompanying text was so artistic.

What a lovely post! I do hope you will keep a record of this post for future generations that will wear the watch.

I absolutely love the first photo, it's beautiful! The bouquet is very large for a bridesmaid - perhaps that's how it was back then.

The last two photos just touch my heart. Take care of that treasure.

Thank you,
Deborah

I had no idea Great Grandma Rose was only 15 when she got married ... so she was 16 or 17 when she had Nana?
